Herefordshire & things to do
Herefordshire offers miles and miles of byways and footpaths that lead to stunning views, and wind through beautiful countryside. Some of our favourites are:
Visit Hereford
The city of Hereford is only a 15-minute drive away from the house. It has history, shopping, and lovely scenery of the River Wye. Visit the golden-stone Cathedral to see the Mappa Mundi- a European Medieval map of the world- and the Chained Library. If you fancy some shopping, have a walk along Church Street where you will find lots of independent shops. If you want to experience the River Wye in all its glory, Hereford Canoe Hire offers different canoe and kayak experiences.
Visit Ledbury
Ledbury is less than a 20 minute drive away and is a picturesque market town with lots of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. For literature lovers, the town hosts The Ledbury Poetry Festival so if you are lucky enough to catch-it, it is well worth a visit. For the history buffs, there is also Eastnor Castle. The town is close to the Malvern Hills so it is the perfect place to refuel after a hike.
Visit Hay-on-Wye
The ‘town of Book’s’ straddles the border between England and Wales and is on the River Wye, it’s about 40 minutes away by car. The town is famous for the Hay Festival and its literature, you’ll find bookshops galore - it is the perfect spot for slowly browsing independent shops and reading in a quaint cafe. We like Richard Booth’s Bookshop, Addyman Books and Haystacks Music and More, The Cosy Club and The Old Electric Shop.
Walk the Malverns
The British Camp walk is a 3.5-mile circular route that starts at the British Camp car park and climbs to the summit of the Herefordshire Beacon where you will be rewarded with spectacular views.
Black Mountains
Part of the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains are the easternmost of the four mountain ranges of hills that comprise the Brecon Beacons National Park. Starting in the Black Hill car park (HR2 0PL), this circular route is on the border between England and Wales and promises stunning views. After all that hiking, enjoy a well-earned pint or roast at The Bulls Head in Craswell.
Symonds Yat Rock
Symonds Yat Rock is a historic viewpoint with breathtaking views of the River Wye. With such a high viewpoint, it is also a popular spot for bird watchers who come to spot the Peregrine Falcons. There are several trails and circular walks that are clearly marked once you arrive at the car park. You can choose a gentle wander through the forest on the Woodlands
Trail or take on more of a challenge with The Highmeadow Trails. This is also a great place to rent kayaks or try some rock climbing- there are lots of outdoor activities to try. Paddleboarding Adventures offers some fun Stand-Up Paddleboarding activities, like SUP Yoga. Whatever you choose, you are guaranteed beautiful scenery.
